Kyla May is an Australian illustrator who lives in a seaside town of Victoria. Kyla has 3 daughters, 3 dogs and 2 cats. At university Kyla completed a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Visual Communication and Graphic Design.
After university, Kyla worked as an advertising art director for seven years at Australia’s top creative agency, Clemenger Melbourne BBDO. By 27 years of age, Kyla had won or been nominated for many prestigious industry awards across print, radio and TV, including a nomination for a Gold Lion award from Cannes Advertising Festival.
When Kyla was 28 years old, she created a greeting card range called “Smirk”. Serendipitously this card range become one of Australia’s top selling card ranges and later was licensed on products sold all over the world.
Kyla was then approached by Penguin Publishing New York to illustrate and write a book series “Kyla May Miss. Behaves”. Since then Kyla has illustrated 30+ children’s books for Scholastic US, Penguin US, Penguin Australia and Pan McMillan Australia, including "Juliet, Nearly a Vet", "Lotus Lane" and "Star Girl".
Kyla is also an experienced animation art director and designer. She has art directed and designed six animated television series for Channel Nine, Channel Ten, ABC, The Disney Channel and Nickelodeon. Kyla’s latest series was “Kuu Kuu Harajuku”, co-created by Gwen Stefani.
In between children’s book illustration and television series, Kyla has designed toys for Moose Toys and Mattel.
Kyla’s inspiration are her children and her animals. She has been creating products for children for most of her career, which keeps her young at heart.
