Organisational Structure
We are an Incorporated Association (#A0019801B), a non-profit organisation of illustrators.
Our organisation is directed by our Statement of Purpose:
“The purposes of the association are to advocate, educate and help build business for illustrators.”
Our organisation includes approximately 150 illustrators from all over Australia and Aotearoa/New Zealand.
Our committee is the made up of members and volunteers, just like you. We value the support of volunteers, sponsors, supporters and our wider community.
We have a number of volunteer roles for members and non-members, if you’d like to get involved. We would love to hear from you, please email office@illustratorsaustralia.com.
You can fill in our simple survey here if you’d like to volunteer. We would love to have your involvement.
As an Incorporated Association in the State of Victoria we are governed Model Rules, these ensure that we are a democratic, non-profit organisation that follows our purpose and acts in the best interests and benefit of our members.
You can read the Model Rules here.
Our Organisation is Human-Made
Our committee is made up of working illustrators just like you, members who give their own time to help run the organisation. As a non-profit Incorporated Association all the committee roles are unpaid and voluntary.
Illustrators Australia depends on the generous, skilful, collaborative and resourceful nature of its members. We learn from each other and build on the efforts of committees of the past to solidify and grow. Over the decades since it’s formation it has boasted wonderful illustrators at its helm.
Perhaps one day you will take your turn as part of our committee?
It takes a lot of effort and people to deliver what we do, with more people involved we can do even more. If you want to see something happen, join us and help make it happen! We always need plenty of volunteers as well as all our committee members.

The Organisation’s Culture
Illustrators Australia has been around for over 35 years, it has seen whole generation and more of illustrators grow from youth into full blow careers. Careers that last well into what might normally be considered ‘retirement’. It seems like all artists, illustrators never really retire.
It’s like that when you love what you do and we love what we do!
That doesn’t mean illustration isn’t a job, it is. We take that very seriously. Art is finally being recognised again as ‘real work’ we hope that people will value the arts and artists as the professionals we are.
Illustrators Australia started as a collective of artist, equals and friends. That spirit has carried us through all these years and many committees.
As an organisation we have had over 1700 individual members since inception. You, as a member are a special one. We each retain our own member number, even if we happen to come and go over the long-years.
Each member of the organisation is valued, seen, known and equal. That is very special and import to who we are, that each member is respected.
The organisation effectively works like a co-operative, (although structured as an Incorporated Association with hierarchical titles and structure); most of our decisions are unanimous and everyone gets an equal chance to have their say and have a voice opinions in meetings.
It is overall a very positive and co-operative group. Our focus is on ethical and responsible decision making, collaboration, co-operation being productive and having fun! We think the world needs more fun. 🙂
Maybe that’s why we never retire?
